El vAcíO cOmo eXpLorAción fOrmAl de lA OBservAciÓn/CompoSiciONEs CON Luz solAr/The Void as a Formal Exploration of OBSERVATION / COMPOSITIONS with SUNLIGHT(2022)

During the third year of my grant from the National System of Creators, I proposed revisiting the work of several painters, including Malevich. Through his work Black Square on a White Background, Malevich developed a political stance by eliminating all narrative forms in an attempt to break with established ways of seeing, shaped by the weight of painting’s long history. His work placed the void at the forefront for the first time, inviting a reflection on what he called “pure sensitivity” in his writings. By dismantling historical constructions, he sought to make way for a new way of thinking and conceiving of painting.

Reflecting on these ideas, I wanted to investigate the void through an understanding of light in painting—not by representing light, but by incorporating it into the work itself. I therefore decided to use rays of sunlight as part of the artwork, continuing my exploration of elements of reality within painting.

Each ray of sunlight carries a journey of approximately 170 million years from its formation in the Sun’s core to its arrival at our retina. Once it leaves the Sun, however, it takes only eight minutes and a little more to reach us.
