Luz EN TIEMPos De OscUrIDaD/LIGHT IN TIME OF DARKNESS (2024-2025)

How can we approach painting through the use of other materials, and why?

Light in Times of Darkness is a series that emerged from a migratory experience outside my home country. For family reasons, we settled in a town in the American Midwest, where light changes radically with the seasons. The long winter, marked by low temperatures, profoundly transforms the perception of the surroundings, making white a constant and meaningful presence.

White became a point of departure: light, space, and pause. As a predominant tone in painting, it allows me to create contrasts while evoking expansiveness, openness, and possibility. These meanings led me to conceptually explore the expansion of painting beyond its traditional boundaries, incorporating other materials and elements that broaden its formal and perceptual possibilities.

This exploration takes place within a highly complex context shaped by fear, intolerance, and discrimination. In this setting, the expansion of painting acquires both a formal and a conceptual dimension. It is one of my primary artistic concerns, as I recognize an intrinsic relationship between the possibilities of painting and the ways in which we see, perceive, and construct the world.
